Campus Outreach continues to be shaped and defined by the values the ministry embodied at its founding in Birmingham, AL. These values were largely influenced by Rev. Frank Barker, founding pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Rev. Barker and Briarwood were responsible for the first Campus Outreach ministry, which was fueled by values such as trusting God by living by faith, a commitment to developing and multiplying leaders, and a focus on reaching those students who do not yet know Jesus Christ.
2 Cor. 5:14-15 “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised.”
We value God’s love as the compelling motivation of our lives and believe that a true experience of His love leads to following Christ and no longer living for self.
2 Peter 1:3-4 “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”
Matt. 9:37-38 “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.'”
We rely on God’s faithfulness to His promises. Therefore, we value prayer. We believe that through praying as Jesus commanded, we will see God work in amazing fulfillment of His promises.
Mark 10:43-45 “But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Just as Jesus did, we value the development of leaders. Leaders are those who, in the power of the Spirit, seek to lay down their life for the benefit of others…just as Jesus did.
John 15:8 “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”
2 Tim. 2:1-2 “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
We value the example of ministry through multiplication that is repeated over and over in Scripture. We believe that it is not merely a question of effectiveness but of bringing glory to God.
Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
We value taking the Gospel to those who have not yet responded to Jesus’ offer of salvation. We seek to follow Christ’s example of proactively taking the Gospel to the world.
